8 Dutch Shorts at Curtas Vila do Conde 2022

The 30th edition of the festival has a diverse Dutch line-up

The Portuguese Curtas Vila do Conde International Film Festival aims to promote cinematographic and audio-visual works, focusing on the discovery of new films and filmmakers. This year, which is already its 30th edition, the Academy Award-qualifying festival has eight Dutch shorts in its line-up.

It's Nice in Here by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers

World premiered at Cannes' Semaine de la Critique 2022, It's Nice in Here* is selected for the International Competition. Directed by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers and produced by Valk Productions, It's Nice in Here is a fragmented portrait of a moment, a person, and a place, seen through the subjective memories of a young Black girl, Imani, and a rookie police officer, David, who both have wildly different recollections of the same faithful moment in a corner store that will leave their lives altered forever. Sales are handled by SND Films and festival distribution is handled by Kapitein Kort.

Karel Doing's A Perfect Storm is selected for the Experimental Competition. A Perfect Storm is a landscape film or, more precisely, a landscape imprinted on the film's emulsion. The artist has used seeds, tiny composite flowers and other small elements of cultivated plants that grow in his garden and wild plant species gathered from a nearby nature reserve. The film consists of sequences that are intricately composed and parts that are completely 'self-organised. Festival distribution is handled by Eye Experimental

Wall #4* by Lucas Camps is selected for the My Generation Competition. Earlier selections include Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival 2021, Interfilm Berlin 2021 and Oldenburg International Film Festival 2021, where it won the award for Best Short Film. In Wall #4, a cinema audience start mocking the film they are watching. However, the events in the theatre take an unexpected turn. Festival distribution is handled by Interfilm

Minority Dutch co-production Luce and the Rock* is selected for the Curthinas Competition. Directed by Britt Raes and co-produced by Studio Pupil, the animated short world premiered at the Berlinale 2022, where it received a special mention. Furthermore, it was selected for Annecy 2022. Luce and the Rock is the story of two friends who, although they seem to have nothing in common, end up facing their fear of the unknown together. Sales are handled by Miyu Distribution. Both Marlon Brando* by Vincent Tilanus and Room for Film and Easter Eggs*, directed by Nicolas Keppens and co-produced by Ka-Ching Cartoons are selected for the European Film Academy Shorts Programme.

Furthermore, classic short Rain by Joris Ivens and Things by Femke Schaap and 60 Layers of Cake Foundation are set to screen in retrospective programs: Rain as part of the Retrospective Programme and Things as part of the Cinemini on Tour Programme.
