Dutch Animations at Cinanima 2022

An overview of animated films that screen in Espinho, Portugal

Cinanima International Animation Film Festival Espinho celebrates successful animation features and shorts of recent years. There are seven Dutch animated films and co-productions screening at the 46th edition.


It's Nice in Here by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers

It's Nice in Here* by Robert-Jonathan Koeyers and Valk Productions is selected for the International Competition. Sales are handled by SND Films. A fragmented portrait of a moment, a person, and a place, seen through the subjective memories of a young Black girl, Imani, and a rookie police officer, David, who both have wildly different recollections of the same faithful moment in a corner store that will leave their lives altered forever.

Minority Dutch co-production Nayola**, directed by José Miguel Ribeiro and co-produced by il Luster Films, is selected for the International Competition. Sales are handled by Urban Distribution International. Angola. Three generations of women plagued by the civil war, Lelena (the grandmother), Nayola (the daughter) and Yara (the granddaughter). A painful secret, a reckless search, a combat song. A suspended love, an initiatory journey, a tragic swoop.

Music animation The Smile, directed and produced by Erik van Schaaik, is a story about beauty and horror, the definitive biopic documentary about the life and the downfall of Knud Dendermonde, the world-famous damsel-devouring horror-movie actor we all know as The Smile. It completes the Dutch line-up in the International Competition.

  • Pig*, directed by Jorn Leeuwerink and produced by Studio Pupil, is selected for Short Films Grand Panorama
  • Fur, directed by Madeleine Homan, is selected for Short Films Grand Panorama
  • Hide Baby Rhino!, directed by Steph van Dijk, is selected for Short Films Elementary School
  • Late Night - Ghost Echo, directed by Tiago Araújo, is selected for Grand Panorama School
