10 Documentaries Selected for Docaviv 2022

A huge line-up of Dutch films are selected for Israel's largest documentary film festival

Taking place in Tel Aviv, Docaviv exclusively focuses on documentary films, screening over 120 documentaries every year. The programmes include several competitions, special tribute programme dedicated to the work of esteemed filmmakers, as well as themed programmes dedicated to music, art, social issues, virtual reality and new technologies, and other curated programmes. This year, 10 Dutch (co-)productions screen at the festival.


O, Collecting Eggs Despite the Times by Pim Zwier

Depth of Field Competition

O, Collecting Eggs Despite the Times* and A Marble Travelogue are selected for the Depth of Field Competition. O, Collecting Eggs Despite the Times is directed by Pim Zwier and produced by Moondocs. The documentary world premiered at IDFA 2021. O is An unconventional documentary set around the beginning of WWII that reveals German ornithologist Max Schönwetter’s fascination for the egg.

Minority Dutch co-production A Marble Travelogue by Sean Wang and Muyi Film world premiered at IDFA 2021. The premiere was the start of a succesful festival run, including selections for Visions du Reel and Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival, both 2022. In A Marble Travelogue, blocks of white marble from a Greek quarry are shipped to China, where sculptors turn them into Hellenistic-style statues and columns. The leftover grit is processed into souvenirs, which are returned to Europe and sold to Chinese tourists. With a light touch and wry humor, the film portrays a chain along this cyclical marble route, that runs from capital to manufacturing, wholesale, retail, and consumer to meet a variety of human landscapes of a globalization driven by the Chinese economy.

Panorama Programme

The Panorama programme focuses on new releases that show a broad view of reality. Selected for this programme is Three Minutes - A Lengthening* by Bianca Stigter and Family Affair Films. This year, for the first time, Docaviv and Yad Vashem will be presenting the Yad Vashem Award for an Outstanding Holocaust-related Documentary. A $3,000 prize will be awarded to Bianca Stigter’s film Three Minutes: A Lengthening. The documentary examines a home film shot in 1938 in a Jewish town in Poland and delays its ending. An essay about film, history and memory. Earlier selections include Toronto International Film Festival (world premiere), Sundance, IDFA (all 2021), Telluride and DOC NYC (both 2022). Sales are handled by Autlook Filmsales.

Furthermore, Four Journeys* and Shabu* will screen in the Panorama programme. Four Journeys is directed by Louis Hothothot and produced by Pieter van Huystee Film & TV. Earlier selections include IDFA 2021 and Hotdocs 2022. Shabu by Shamira Raphaëla and Tangerine Tree continues its festival run, which includes IDFA 2021, IFFR 2022, Hotdocs 2022 and Berlinale 2022, where it received a special mention. Sales are handled by Resevoir Docs.

Masters Programme

The Masters programme shines light on renowned directors and this includes Mr. Landsbergis and Turn Your Body to the Sun**. Minority Dutch co-production Mr. Landsbergis by Sergei Loznitsa and Atoms & Void documents a hero of our time. An intimate portrait of a music professor turned head of state, Vytautas Landsbergies, whose love of his country and hatred of communism made history. The film world premiered at IDFA 2021 and selected for Cinema du Reel 2022.

Turn Your Body to the Sun is directed by Aliona van der Horst and produced by Docmakers. In this documentary, a daughter attempts to retrace her father’s steps against the backdrop of the Second World War and the dictatorships of Stalin and Hitler. The documentary world premiered at IDFA 2021 and had its international premiere at Thessaloniki Documentary Film Festival 2022.

Three more documentaries complete the full Dutch selection at Docaviv 2022. Dreaming Walls* by Amélie van Elmbt, Maya Duverdier and co-producer Basalt Film is selected for the Arts & Culture programme. Light: Stockhausen's Legacy** by Oeke Hoogendijk and Witfilm is selected for Music programme. In Flow of Words* by Eliane Esther Bots and Near/by Film is selected for the Shorts competition.
