Malmö International Children's and Young People's Film Festival, also named BUFF, has a wide variety of Dutch films in the selection of its 2022 edition, which will be a hybrid festival, with screenings onsite as well as online. A total of nine (co-)productions from the Netherlands are selected, four of them in competition.
I Don't Wanna Dance by Flynn von Kleist
Oink** by Mascha Halberstad and Viking Film has been selected for the Children's Competition. After its world premiere at the Berlinale (Generation Kplus section), the stop-motion animation also screened at the New York International Children's Film Festival. Oink tells the wonderful and exciting story of Babs, her pet pig Oink and the difficulties they must overcome in order to stay together. Sales are handled by LevelK.
Shabu* by Shamira Raphaëla and Tangerine Tree's entry follows up its recent Berlinale Generation Kplus selection, where it received a special mention by the jury. World premiered at IDFA 2022, the documentary follows fourteen-year-old Shabu, who wrecked his grandmother’s car. His whole family is angry with him and he has to make amends before his grandmother returns from a vacation in Suriname. Sales are handled by Resevoir Docs.
I Don't Wanna Dance* by Flynn von Kleist and The Rogues is a coming-of-age story about Joey, a 15-year-old boy who needs to decide whether to pull out of the destructive dance with his mother, or stay with her at the cost of his own happiness. Earlier selections include Movies That Matter Festival, where it received a special mention, and Giffoni Film Festival, where it won Best Film in the 13+ competition.
Furthermore, five Dutch (co-)productions screen at the festival, as well as BUFF's online platform. Buladó** by Eché Janga and Keplerfilm tells the magical-realistic and heartwarming story of a small family in the countryside of Curaçao. As the different mentalities of rational father Ouira and spiritual grandfather Weljo start to clash, eleven-year-old Kenza is determined to find her own path into adult life. Captain Nova** (opening film CineKid 2021) by Maurice Trouwborst and Keplerfilm is about a fighter pilot travels back in time to save the future world from environmental disaster, but a side-effect turns her young again and no-one takes her seriously. Beta Cinema handles sales.
Two shorts also screen at the festival: Spotless* and Sunshine Motel. Spotless by Emma Branderhorst and IJswater Films, world premiered at the Berlinale where it won a Crystal Bear, follows fifteen-year-old Ruby who struggles with her period, while not wanting to ask her mother for help with period producs, as their financial situation is not stable. Kapitein Kort handles sales. Sunshine Motel by Rosita Wolkers and BIND Film follows seven-year-old Rose, who is on holiday with her mother when she wakes up alone in the Sunshine Motel. She is determined to make this a memorable holiday.
Also, two Dutch minority co-production screen at BUFF: feature-length animation film Best Birthday Ever** by Michael Ekblad and co-producer Submarine and family comedy Mini-Zlatan and Uncle Darling by Christian Lo and co-producer Viking Film. In Best Birthday Ever, little Charlie, who lives with his parents on the edge of town, is used to having their full attention, but that changes when his baby sister Clara is born. In Mini-Zlatan and Uncle Darling, all is set for a perfect stay with Tommy, Ella's favorite uncle. But the fun week turns into a disastrous adventure when Steve shows up. He is Tommy's new boyfriend.
