Starting Monday June 7th and going on until Saturday June 12th, Animafest Zagreb screens 5 Dutch short animations in different programmes. With 4 major productions and 1 minority co-production, all telling diverse, interesting and playful short stories, the Netherlands has a strong line-up at this year's event. See NL takes a look at the Dutch programme.
We have two animated shorts in the Grand Competition for Short Films at Animafest Zagreb. First, we have See Me by Patty Stenger and Yvonne Kroese. Produced by Family Affair Films, Five-year-old Alice is forced to go to a party for grown-ups with her mother. She tries to get noticed at the party, however it does not work. She gets scared and decides to create her own little world with the anchovies she found on her toast. Before it screens at Animafest, See Me won the the Golden Calf for Best Short and Best Dutch Short at the Kaboom Festival, both this year.
Secondly, we have minority co-production Easter Eggs by Nicolas Keppens. In Easter Eggs, two teenagers are looking for something extraordinary in an ordinary village. They try to catch an exotic bird that escaped from a Chinese restaurant. The film got selected for Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival and Berlinale in 2021. See NL also spoke with Joost van den Bosch from production company Ka-Ching Cartoons about Easter Eggs. Miyu Distribution handles sales for this film.
Two animated shorts screen in the Films for Children Competition, with one of them, The Cloudmaker, having its international premiere! Directed by Hanna van Niekerk and produced by Hazazah Pictures, we follow the charismatic Hipólito, who transforms clouds into wondrous figures. However, he has a true love on earth and if he wants to see her, Hipólito needs to find a worthy successor.
Ink also screens in this programme. In Ink, directed by Erik Verkerk, Joost van den Bosch and produced by Ka-Ching Cartoons, a clean-up neat-freak octopus uses all of his tentacles in trying to reach what he is aiming for. This is not the first selection of Ink. Before Animafest, the film got selected for Clermont-Ferrand IFF, New York International Children's Film Festival and won the Cinekid and KuKi Festival Audience Awards. Festival distribution for both The Cloudmaker and Ink is done by KLIK Distribution.
We also have one production in the World Panorama programme. Sad Beauty takes place in a heavily polluted world, where a young woman mourns the disappearance of animal species. When she falls ill due to a bacterial infection, nature appears to send her a message in her hallucinations. Sad Beauty is directed and produced by Arjen Brentjes. Last September, See NL spoke with him about his latest film. SND Films is responsible for sales of Sad Beauty, together with the earlier mentioned See Me and Ink.
