Memory Lane by director Jelle de Jonge has been selected as the Netherlands’ entry to the 97th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
Memory Lane** is Jelle de Jonge’s third feature after domestic box office hits Bon Bini Holland and Love over Distance. The feature film is written by Marijn de Wit and Jelle de Jonge, and is produced by Hazazah Pictures (NL) in coproduction with the EO, Umami Media (NL), and Menuetto Film (BE). International sales are handled by Incredible Film.
Martin van Waardenberg and Leny Breederveld play the main characters in the melancholic and humoristic road movie in which memories, long-standing love, and acceptance of change are central. Memory Lane was released in the Dutch cinemas this spring by Dutch FilmWorks, drew more than 100.000 viewers within two weeks, and was awarded with a Golden Film. The film did very well in Dutch theatres and attracted over 250.000 visitors. In the US the film has screened at Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival.
Synopsis
An unexpected letter disrupts the lives of elderly couple Maartje and Jaap, forcing them to confront what they've long avoided. Maartje, who is battling dementia, and grumpy Jaap embark on a road trip to say goodbye to a dying friend in Spain. Along the way, they encounter a changed world, but nevertheless rediscover their shared past through old cassette tapes. Jaap's icy demeanour thaws and the journey makes them face the reality of her dementia, teaching Jaap to care for Maartje in a different way.
