Dutch line-up for Hot Docs

2024 Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival is running from April 25 to May 5

A range of 'Hot Docs' from The Netherlands is off to Canada to be part of the festival's selection this year.


Still: Nice Ladies - Mariia Ponomarova

Mariia Ponomarova's Nice Ladies* (prod. Labyrint Film) is celebrating its international premiere in Art of Resistance. The doc about a team of ageing Ukrainian cheerleaders that hold onto their friendship as each navigates the trauma of war in her own way, recently world premiered at Movies that Matter. Sales are handled by Cat&Docs. SEE NL spoke to Ponomarova about her film before Hot Docs.

Sweeties (prod. Witfilm) by Natalie Bruijns & Anneke de Lind van Wijngaarden will have its international premiere in the World Showcase section. The film follows three 13-year-old Dutch girls experiencing their first romance at a French campsite. The doc duo also talked to SEE NL about their film, leading up to the festival.

Kinshuk Surjan's Marching in the Dark* (min. co-prod. SNG Film) is also part of the World Showcase. It will be the film's North-American premiere, after celebrating its world premiere at CPH:DOX in March. A compelling story about a vicious circle and the first steps towards a resilient women’s movement.

Partaking in the International Competition is The Fabulous Gold Harvesting Machine by Alfredo Pourailly De La Plaza (min. co-prod. Windmill). This charming story about aging and love of life is celebrating its world premiere.

Two Dutch films are part of the Shorts section. The Story of Ne Kuko by Festus Toll (prod. Doxy, sales: First Hand Films) will celebrate its international premiere. SEE NL talked to Festus Toll after the film world premiered at IDFA.

Lastly, Samira Elagoz & Z Walsh' You can't get what you want but you can get me is also having an international premiere in the section. The unique slideshow documenting two long-haired trans men falling in love world premiered at IFFR.
