Still: Burning Out - Saskia Gubbels

Part of the Urgent Matters section is Saskia Gubbels' Burning Out* (prod. Tangerine Tree), about inclusivity within the Amsterdam fire department. The doc is celebrating its international premiere after world premiering at IDFA at the end of last year. SEE NL interviewed Gubbels about her documentary in the run-up to IDFA. 

Alreadymade** (prod. Tomtit Film, sales: CAT&Docs) by Barbara Visser will have its international premiere in the Artists & Auteurs section. The hybrid documentary that questions Marcel Duchamp’s authorship over arguably the 20th Century’s most important piece of modern art, was also part of IDFA (world premiere). We talked to Visser when she was heading to Amsterdam.

Another doc that had its world premiere at IDFA last year and is now being presented in the Backstory section in Copenhagen: The Kyiv Files** (prod. Zeppers) by Walter Stokman. The spy story has also been shown at Tallinn International documentary FF - Docpoint in January. SEE NL spoke to Stokman before IDFA 2023.

Marching in the Dark* (min. co-prod. SNG Film) by Kinshuk Surjan is celebrating its world premiere at the festival and is a part of both the Human:Rights Award Competition and Urgent Matters section. A compelling story about a vicious circle and the first steps towards a resilient women’s movement.

Inadelso Cossa's The Nights Still Smell of Gunpowder* (min. co-prod. BALDR Film), will have its international premiere in the Next:Wave competition. The film is centered around the memory of the civil war in Mozambique, world premiered at the Berlinale this year.

Another BALDR Film minority co-production flying out to Copenhagen is Soundtrack to a Coup d'Etat*, as a part of the Artists & Auteurs section. The film by Johan Grimonprez was awarded with the Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation at Sundance, where it world premiered. It is currently being shown at the Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival. We spoke to Frank Hoeve, producer at BALDR Film, in January before Sundance.

They Shot the Piano Player** (min. co-prod. Submarine, sales: Film Constellation) by Fernando Trueba & Javier Mariscal is in the Sound&Vision section. The artsy, melodic animation documentary was the opening film in Thessaloniki, world premiered at Telluride Film Festival in the US, screened at Toronto IFF and was selected for the Sounds section in Zurich. The film portrays a New York music journalist who sets out to discover the truth behind the tragic disappearance of young Brazilian piano virtuoso Tenorio Jr.

Lastly, The Human Surge 3* (min. co-prod. Revolver Amsterdam, sales: Rediance Films) is being presented in the Artists & Auteurs section. The film by argentinian director Eduardo Williams world premiered in Concorso Internazionale at the Locarno Film Festival 2023 (read the SEE NL interview with the director), was selected for the TIFF Wavelength programme, competed in San Sebastian Festival's all-encompassing section Zabaltegi-Tabakalera and screened in Montréal's Les Nouveaus Alchemistes. Williams' second feature shows different groups of friends, trying to get away from their depressing jobs, meandering constantly towards the mystery of new possibilities.
