Close to Vermeer on its way to the Oscars ®

Dutch documentary Close to Vermeer by Suzanne Raes and Docmakers is in the race for an Academy Award in the Documentary Feature category. Close to Vermeer is the only Dutch feature-length documentary that qualified in this category for the AMPAS this year.

In the run-up to the largest Vermeer exhibition ever at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, a number of Vermeer enthusiasts and experts set out in search of what makes a Vermeer truly Vermeer. In doing so, they get inside the head of the painter to analyze all the decisions he made.

The film is produced by Ilja Roomans for Docmakers and world sales are handled by Deckert Distribution. Close to Vermeer* was successfully theatrical released in the US by Kino Lorber. The film has been sold to 14 countries so far and has screened at international festivals such as Festival International du Film sur l'Art Montréal, DOK.fest Munich, DocAviv, Pärnu Film Festival and New Zealand International Film Festival.

Other Dutch films submitted for the Oscars are Sweet Dreams** by Ena Sendijarević, the Dutch submission for Best International Feature. And four Dutch shorts are also in the race: documentaries Neighbour Abdi* by Douwe Dijkstra and I Want to go Higher* by Amanda van Hesteren and short fiction films The Debit Cardby Thijs Bouman and About Me* by Ali Asgari. SEE NL supports the Dutch films and their makers on their way to the 96th Academy Awards.

The Academy announces the short lists on December 21th. The nominees will be announced on January 23th. The 96th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday March 10th, 2023.
