Hot Docs Festival has a diverse collection of Dutch documentaries screening at its 30th edition. A total of six documentaries from the Netherlands have been selected for the festival, which takes place in Toronto between April 27 and May 7.
All You See by Niki Padidar
All You See*, directed by Niki Padidar and produced by mint film office, is selected for The Changing Face of Europe programme. The documentary world premiered as the opening film of IDFA 2022. What if from one day to the next, you’re no longer seen, but stared at? In their new lives in the Netherlands, three protagonists unintentionally provoke reactions on a daily basis: where are you from, do you speak Dutch, do you tan in the sun? It's an experience all too familiar to director Niki Padidar, who enters into conversation with them, interspersed with a visual exploration of what it means to be subjected to the projections of others. How long can a newcomer be considered new?
White Balls on Walls** by Sarah Vos screens in the section Artscapes. Produced by Zeppers Film & TV, the documentary world premiered at IDFA 2022 and was previously selected for CPH:DOX 2023. In White Balls on Walls Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum wants to be more diverse and inclusive. But how? An honest look behind the scenes into the sometimes-fraught process taking place in many public institutions.
An Asian Ghost Story by Bo Wang is selected for Shorts section. It had its world premiere at CPH:DOX 2023, where it won the NEW:VISION Award. This work is about haunting memories of Asia's late 20th-century modernization. The story departs from a 1965 United States embargo on the hair trade, known as the "Communist Hair Ban". Yet, in every wig resides a ghost from the imperial past. An Asian Ghost Story is produced by Vines Films.
Ana Bravo Pérez's Mother Earth Inner Organs, which world premiered at IDFA 2022, is selected for the Shorts section. This film is a journey from Amsterdam to Wayú territory in the North of Colombia following the smoke, the rotten smell of burning Mma – meaning Mother Earth in Wayuunaiki. Bravo-Pérez weaves a narrative that goes from the surface of Mma to its depths. From the experience of the Wayú people and the filmmaker’s reflection on extractivist practices to plastic experimentations that create a lucid dream, an eye opener to how extractivism of coal affects life. Festival distribution is handled by EYE Experimental.
Two Dutch minority co-productions are screening at Hot docs: Total Trust, directed by Jialing Zhang and co-produced by Witfilm, and 5 Seasons of Revolution*, directed by Lina and co-produced by Docmakers. Total Trust is selected for the Special Presentations section and 5 Seasons of Revolution is selected for the Persister section.
