CPH:DOX 2023: 4 Dutch Documentaries

The Netherlands are represented at the 20th edition of CPH:DOX

CPH:DOX is a leading international documentary film festival held annually in Copenhagen, Denmark. The 20th edition, which run between March 15 and 26, is screening four Dutch (co-)productions.

White Balls on Walls by Sarah Vos

White Balls on Walls**, directed by Sarah Vos and produced by Zeppers Film & TV, is selected for the Highlights and Predicting the Past programmes. The documentary world premiered at IDFA 2022. In White Balls on Walls, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum wants to be more diverse and inclusive. But how? An honest look behind the scenes into the sometimes-fraught process taking place in many public institutions.

Selected for the International Competition is short documentary An Asian Ghost Story by director Bo Wang, producer Ruoyao Jane Yao and executive produced by Jia Zhao. This work, which is celebrating its world premiere, is about haunting memories of Asia's late 20th-century modernization. The story departs from a 1965 United States embargo on the hair trade, known as the "Communist Hair Ban". Yet, in every wig resides a ghost from the imperial past.

Dutch minority co-production The Natural History of Destruction* by Sergei Loznitsa is screening in the Artists & Authors programme. The documentary is co-produced by Atoms & Void. Inspired by W.G. Sebald’s book, The Natural History of Destruction posits the question: is it morally acceptable to use a civilian population as an instrument of war? Sales are handled by Progress Film.

Where is Anne Frank**, directed by Ari Folman and co-produced by Submarine, is selected for Børne:Dox. When Anne Frank’s imaginary friend Kitty emerges from the famous diary, she sets out on a journey through present-day Amsterdam to discover Anne’s fate. Sales are handled by Wild Bunch.
