DMZ International Documentary Film Festival (DMZ Docs) is a Korean film festival for documentaries and the largest festival for documentary in Asia. The festival primarily focuses on introducing documentaries from Asia and puts the spotlight on outstanding works all around the world. 5 Dutch (co-)produced documentaries are in this year's line-up. The 14th DMZ Docs will take place between the 22nd and 29th of September.
The Treasures of Crimea by Oeke Hoogendijk
Selected for the international competition are Oeke Hoogendijk's The Treasures of Crimea** and Paz Encina's EAMI*. Selected for CPH:DOX and Movies that Matter, The Treasures of Crimea show how an ancient collection from long lost civilizations became a focal point of one of the world’s major political controversies today. The documentary is produced by Zeppers Film & TV and sales are handled by Reservoir Docs.
EAMI is a minority Dutch co-production co-produced by Revolver Amsterdam. It was selected for IFFR, CPH:DOX, Visions du Réel and DocAviv. Eami means ‘forest’ in Ayoreo. It also means ‘world’. The indigenous Ayoreo-Totobiegosode people do not make a distinction: the trees, animals, and plants that have surrounded them for centuries are all that they know. They now live in an area experiencing the fastest deforestation on the planet. Sales are handled by MPM Premium.
A Marble Travelogue is selected for the Global Vision programme. Directed by Sean Wang and produced by Muyi Film, the documentary world premiered at IDFA, followed with selections for CPH:DOX and Visions du Réel. In A Marble Travelogue, a marble stone mined in Greece takes us on its Odyssey journey of globalization driven by the Chinese economy. Sales are handled by Rediance Films.
World premiered at Venice Film Festival, The Kiev Trial by Sergei Loznitsa is selected for Masters programme. The Kiev Trial, also known as the Kiev Nuremberg, took place in January of 1946 in the Soviet Union, and was one of the first post-war trials convicting German Nazis and their collaborators. The documentary is produced by Atoms & Void.
Peter Lom's short documentary Letter to San Zaw Htway is selected for the DMZ-POV programme. The brutal military coup of February 1st of 2021 destroyed ten years of fragile democratic transition in the Myanmar, and has killed and imprisoned thousands. The anonymous writers in this film seek inspiration from San Zaw Htway’s all too brief life to deal with the cruelty of this military regime. For he overcame 13 years of prison with wisdom, resilience and grace. The documentary is produced by ZIN DOC and sales are handled by JourneyMan.
