8 Dutch (Co-)productions at Zlin 2022

Zlin International Film Festival for Children and Youth has 8 Dutch films in its line-up

The 62nd edition of Zlin Film Festival kicks off and eight Dutch (co-)produced films are screening at the festival. Spread over different categories, four of them are in competition. The festival continues until June 1st. See NL has it lined up.


Bigman by Camiel Schouwenaar

Children and Youth Films in Competition

Two (co-)productions are selected for the International Competition of Feature Films in the Junior Category: Bigman** and Where Is Anne Frank?** Bigman is directed by Camiel Schouwenaar and produced by Rinkel Film. This bold family drama is centered around 13-year-old soccer player Dylan, who is forced to accept fate after a car accident leaves him wheelchair-bound. But, through his friendship with Youssef and 14-year-old Maya, he rediscovers his joy for life. Sales are handled by M-Appeal. Directed by Ari Folman and co-produced by Submarine, Where Is Anne Frank? follows Kitty, Anne Frank's imaginary friend, who sets out on a journey through present-day Amsterdam to discover Anne's fate. Sales are handled by Wild Bunch.

Shabu* by Shamira Raphaëla and Tangerine Tree is selected for the Competition of European Documentary Films for Young Audience. World premiered at IDFA 2021 and selected for Berlinale 2022, where it received a special mention, the documentary follows Shabu who wrecked his grandmother’s car. His whole family is angry with him and he has to make amends before his grandmother returns from a vacation in Suriname. Sales are handled by Resevoir Docs.

Bristles* by Quentin Haberham and Family Affair Films is selected for the International Competition of Short Animations for Children. In this animated short, when the most beautiful brush in the jar suddenly dries out, he does everything he can to save his beautiful bristles to be able to paint again. Festival distribution is handled by Kaboom Distribution.

Four Films in World Children's Film Panorama

Captain Nova**, Charlie Cooper - The Egg Mystery, Best Birthday Ever** and Mini-Zlatan and Uncle Darling are selected for World Children's Film Panorama programme. Opening film of CineKid 2021, Captain Nova is directed by Maurice Trouwborst and produced by Keplerfilm. In Captain Nova, a fighter pilot travels back in time to save the future world from environmental disaster, but a side-effect turns her young again and no-one takes her seriously. Sales are handled by Beta Film.

Charlie Cooper - The Egg Mystery by Mans van den Berg and NOBS Entertainment follows Charlie Cooper, a fierce girl with the liveliest of imaginations. When the city falls under the spell of a strange egg, Charlie Cooper is convinced it is a special egg that will only hatch on a hidden island. So she embarks on a journey to this island. Sales are handled by Incredible Film.

In Best Birthday Ever, directed by Michael Ekblad and co-produced by Submarine, we get to meet Little Charlie. He lives with his parents on the edge of town and is used to having their full attention, but that changes when his baby sister Clara is born. Sales are handled by Simon Crowe Films International. In Mini-Zlatan and Uncle Darling, directed by Christian Lo and co-produced by Viking Film, all is set for a perfect stay with Tommy, Ella's favorite uncle. But the fun week turns into a disastrous adventure when Steve shows up. He is Tommy's new boyfriend. Sales are handled by Incredible Film.
