Beyond Silence shortlisted for the Oscars

Short film Beyond Silence, debut of Marnie Blok, is one of the 15 films shortlisted for the 68th Academy Awards in the live action short film category.

Still: Beyond Silence - Marnie Blok

Beyond Silence*, produced by PRPL and Exosphere, tells about two women, two generations, one shared trauma. One has been silent for over thirty years, the other for ‘only’ a year and a half. Where one retreats further into silence after a confrontation, the other finds the courage to break it.

Premiering at Tribeca this year it immediately made an impression and was awarded with the Oscar Qualifying Best Narrative Short Award. The jury stated: "Covering an enormous subject with beautiful minimalism. Brilliant performance, raw and devastating. Impressive and emotional." After that the film continued its successful festival run with among others the Best International Short Award at Palm Springs International Shortfest. On the occasion of its premiere at Tribeca SEE NL talked to Marnie Blok about this hugely personal project and working with the brilliant deaf actress Henrianne Jansen. Read the full interview here. Sales are handled by Premium Films.

Also shortlisted is Dutch minority coproduction The Secret Agent** by Kleber Mendonça Filho, coproduced by Dutch production outfit Lemming Film. It represents Brasil in the International Feature Film category.

Nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced on January 22. The Oscars will be presented on March 15. Read more about the Oscars here
