Still: A Prelude - Wendelien van Oldenborgh

Selected for the Flash Competition is A Prelude by Wendelien van Oldenborgh. Filmed in Aoyama Hachi and Kinone Pension, two locations which tribute to the act of resistance against authoritarian power, the work follows some people dancing, walking, and discussing aspects of conflict and their answers to this. Oldenborgh is returning to Marseille for the third time, her earlier films Obsada (2022) and Of Girls (2023) were also selected for the festival.

End Pull by Netherlands based Armenian-Lithuanian artist Andrius Arutiunian will also celebrate its world premiere in the International competition. The film is a French-Dutch co-production, commissioned by Lyon Biennale and funded through Mondriaan Fonds and produced by Arutiunian himself. The 53-minute film explores deep time, speculative narrative, and psychoacoustic sound. It journeys through an ancient riverbed via a continuous zoom, unveiling layers of geopolitical formations and historical distortions.

Ina, a mermaid reborn in a human body on Earth during a planetary crisis, searches for connection and fellow merpeople to share Atlantis' wisdom. However, her health deteriorates in the toxic environment, and she longs to transcend her human form.
