Dutch films at SIFF 2025

Shanghai International FF takes place from June 13 to June 22

The 27th edition of Shanghai International Film Festival has started its run and has a total of 8 Dutch (co-)productions in its line-up.

Fabula** by Michiel ten Horn is celebrating its Asian premiere in Shanghai. It is selected for Shanghai’s Panorama Program. Earlier this year, the film was opened IFFR with its world premiere in Rotterdam. Desperate to fix a drug deal gone wrong, Jos embarks on a wild journey through the Dutch province of Limburg, agonizing over the question: who or what is punishing me? It is produced by New Amsterdam Film Company

Feature animation Miss Moxy** by directors Vincent Bal & Wip Vernooij will join the festival for its world premiere in Shanghai’s SIFF Animations section. The animation isproduced by Phanta Animation in co-production with BosBros and Belgian production outfit Eyeworks Film & TV Drama. The film follows Miss Moxy, a domesticated cat lost during a family holiday as she must find her way back home through Europe with the help of the most despicable creatures a cat can imagine, discovering the true meaning of friendship. Sales are handled by Studio 100 International

The Blue Trail by Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro and co-produced by Dutch outfit Viking Film is part of the festival’s Viva la Festival section. The work premiered in competition at the Berlinale Film Festival, after which it has been presented at among others Hong Kong IFF and Sydney IFF this spring. 

In the festival’s SIFF Documentaries section four Dutch minority co-productions are represented:

        Among others presented at Viennale 2024 and IDFA 2024
        Special Jury Award for Cinematic Innovation in Park City Sundance and Nomination for an Feature Documentary Oscar at The 97th Academy Awards

      Minority feature Traffic** directed by Teodora Ana Mihai and co-produced by Dutch outfit Bastide Films is also presented at SIFF in The Belt and Road Film Week section. Loosely based on true events, an art heist in a Rotterdam-based museum leads to poignant reflections on the4 treatment of Romanian migrants in Europe. Mihai’s second feature had its Dutch premiere at IFFR in the RTM section.
