The Netherlands are strongly represented at the upcoming edition of the Tribeca Festival with three Dutch shorts.
Still: Beyond Silence - Marnie Blok
Beyond Silence*, Sunny* and short doc Ask Me Anything have been added to the lineup, which already included the earlier announced selection of feature The Wolf, the Fox & the Leopard** by writer/director David Verbeek.
Beyond Silence (prod. PRPL) is the directorial debut of actress and screenwriter Marnie Blok. Blok performed in Brozer (2014) and wrote the screenplay for Jackie (2012), Simon & The Oaks (2011) and recently the series Máxima (2024). In Beyond Silence we follow two women, two generations, the same trauma. One has been silent for more than thirty years, the other only a year and a half. Where one decides to remain silent after a confrontation, the other finds the courage to break the silence. Beyond Silence was previously selected for Movies That Matter and the Netherlands Film Festival. It celebrates its international premiere at Tribeca.
Sunny by German Gruber Jr., a co-production of Flinck Film and Provider Films, tells the story of Curaçaoan Fito (18), a talented guitarist who dreams of moving to the Netherlands, but struggles with a tumultuous past relationship with Sunny. He moves forward, leaving behind his home, relationships, and his guitar. However, mysterious return of his guitar reminds that some memories and connections remain ingrained in his heart. The film will celebrate its international premiere at Tribeca, the film had its world premiere earlier this week at the Curaçao International Film Festival.
Short documentary Ask Me Anything is the debut of Wyneke van Nieuwenhuyzen and follows Abdulaal, who fled from Sudan. He plays sports with friends, does his daily groceries and eats with relatives, before putting on his smart clothes for what he himself calls the Ask me anything sessions. By invitation, Abdulaal calls at for example Rotary meetings, where club members can ask him anything they want to know. During various evenings, concisely cross-edited, numerous painful, ill-informed, but also unusual questions are asked that confront us with how we deal with 'the other'. The short doc was produced by television broadcaster VPRO as part of the Unwritted Rules series. After its world premiere at the Netherlands Film Festival it will now celebrate its international premiere in New York.
