Tragic story of a wealthy woman turned prostitute, who works the streets of Paris during the 1880s.
Hedwig grew up in the second half of the 19th century in a protected environment. After her mother's death, the education of a governess has a suffocating effect on her. She rejects the love of the painter Johan, instead marrying the notary Gerard, a marriage that ends in disappointment. With her childhood friend Ritsaart, a pianist, she leaves for England, but the death of her baby causes psychosis and she flees in madness to France where she begins to live as a morphine prostitute.
