11-year-old Lampie lives by the lighthouse with her father. Every night she lights the lantern, but one stormy night, out of matches, she fails, causing a shipwreck. As punishment, she’s sent to work at the Black House, home to a 'monster' - Edward, a boy with a fishtail. Bonding with him, she learns he has mermaid family beyond the cliffs. But when his father, the Admiral, discovers this, he tries to sell Edward to a carnival. Lampie is forced to decide whether to save her friend or get back to her father.
