A selection of Dutch short films was chosen for Sweden’s major short film festival, screening 300 short films from 70 countries.
Still: Wander To Wonder - Nina Ganz
Two Dutch films are in the race for the International Competition at Uppsala. The short animation Wander to Wonder*by Nina Ganz, is one of them. Ganz's short world premiered last August in the Orrizonti shorts section of Venice Film Festival. See NL interviewed her on this festive occasion. The short is a Netherlands, Belgium, France, UK co-production. Dutch co-production companies attached are Circe Films and Kaap Holland Film. Sales and distribution are handled by Miyu Distribution.
The other Dutch short in the International Competition is The Miracle*by Nienke Deutz. Nienke Deutz’ short animation World premiered at Annecy International Animation FF. SEE NL talked to her in the run up to this festival. The film is a Belgium, France and Netherlands co-production, NL co-produced by Kepler Film. Out of competition there are two Dutch films included in the Family screenings:
Outside (prod. Bye Jane!) by Wouter Keijzer, which world premiered at Cinekid in 2022. The film had festival selections at, among others, New York International Children's Film Festival and Malmö International Children's and Young People's Film Festival – BUFF. In Malmö it won The Region Skåne Short Film Award.
To Break a Butterfly by Kate Hummel, the graduation film of Kate Hummel at the Netherlands Film Academy (2022).
When Doves Try, directed and produced by Thalia de Jong, is included in the Short Shorts program. It world premiered at Go Short ISFF Nijmegen and will also screen at PÖFF Shorts next month.
Tess Martin's Still Life With Woman, Tea, and Letter (prod. Volya Films) is part of this program as well. The ultrashort animation is also screening at DokLeipzig this month as part of a retrospective of her work.
Douwe Dijkstra's Neighbour Abdi is part of the 2022 Award Winners program, as winner of the 2022 Audience Award at Uppsala last year. His film premiered at Locarno 2022, where it won the Pardino d’argento. From there it started its hugely successful festival tour, with recent selections and wins for among others Ann Arbor Film Festival (Awarded with Ken Burns Award for Best of Fest) and REGARD – International Short Film Festival Saguenay (Won: Best Documentary Short Film Award). Sales and distribution is handled by Square Eyes.
Lastly in the Short Shorts program: Storm by Gijs Kast. An animated short made in collaboration with dancer Simon Bus and musician Bardo Camp. It's about storm not only as a weather condition, but also as a state of mind. Storm as a metafor for the struggles in life.
Finally, joining in the Kinky Kino program: Michael Portnoy's Progressive Touch. A United States, Australia & Netherlands co-production, commissioned by Dutch foundation for visual arts De Vleeshal, Middelburg. Earlier festival selections include IFFR and Slamdance.
