Sumerian has acquired the North American rights to Mascot by Remy van Heugten, which had its world premiere in January at Slamdance, and screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam the same month.
Mascot by Remy van Heugten
Sumerian is planning a limited theatrical release this year under the English title Fortunate Son. Sumerian founder Ash Avildsen said the film is “a dark, brutally authentic and beautifully shot independent film centered around troubled youth in unorthodox households. It will undoubtedly strike a nerve with audiences who appreciate gritty arthouse drama, as it did with me.”
Teenager Jerry grows up in a small Dutch seaside town with his loving mother and sister, helping in a centre for mentally disabled people. But when the weekend comes he takes part in organised hooligan fights, liberating the sense of discontent boiling inside him. His ever growing drift towards extremism puts the stability of the whole family in danger.
Mascot is produced by BIND (NL) in co-production with Savage Film (BE) and BNNVARA (NL). It is supported by the Netherlands Film Fund and Film Production Incentive.
Van Heugten's debut feature Son of Mine (Gluckauf)* won four Golden Calves, the Netherlands’ most important film award, including Best Direction and Best Film.
