4 Dutch Winners at Kaboom 2022

Kaboom Animation Festival has 4 Dutch winners at this year's edition

Saturday night was the award night for the 2022 edition of Kaboom Animation Festival. Three Dutch productions were awarded, plus a UK production by Dutch animator Roel van Beek also received a prize. See NL has it lined up.

Bekeken by Kim de Ruyter

Bekeken by Kim de Ruyter won the Best Dutch Short Award. The animated short is the director's graduation film for ArtEZ University of the Arts and was in 2021 awarded the Wildcard Animation handed out by the Netherlands Film Fund. Bekeken is a short film about the tension in watching and being watched and the physical tension that a glance can leave on you. It depicts the experience in a mostly 'nice & nasty' way by playing with the subcutaneous element that comes with a look that attacks your self-image.

Camouflage* by Remco Polman and Mooves won the Nancy Award. A dystopian thriller in which we follow the story of office clerk Amouf who desperately tries to hold his life together while the world around him gets darker and darker, following the rise of De Jager. This flamboyant and highly intimidating creature is a hate-instigating vigilante, who has sworn to systematically prosecute certain groups and Amouf is not a brave character. Will he be strong enough to resist?

Pig* by Jorn Leeuwerink and Studio Pupil won Best Short Audience Award. A group of animals hook up a power grid to the socket-shaped snout of a large, sleeping pig. The animals use the pig’s energy for simple things at first, but they are soon dependent on a city where everything is automated.

A Film About a Pudding by  Dutch animator Roel van Beek won the Best Student Short Award. It is the director's graduation film for the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom. In A Film About a Pudding, after Ronin neglects to clear up her dropped groceries, they start to mix and bubble, transforming into a small pudding. Whilst this initially seems odd, for Ronin, it is easily ignorable. Over the next few days, the pudding grows bigger and bigger. As it threatens to engulf the entire city how far will she, and the other inhabitants of her city, go to continue ignoring it?
