The 44th edition of Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival has started and will continue until February 5th. Two Dutch short documentaries are selected for the International Competition programme: In Flow of Words* and São Paolo Open Wound. Also taking place is the 37th edition of the Short Film Market.
São Paolo Open Wound by Elizabeth Rocha Salgado
In Flow of Words, directed by Eliane Esther Bots and produced by Near/By Film, voices the contradictory position of three interpreters as human cogs in the judicial machine, working with dramatic testimonies from victims, suspects and those accused of war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. The short doc enjoys a hugely successful festival run, with festival selections including Locarno Film Festival, where it won the Pardi di Domani Best Direction Prize and Hamptons International Film Festival where it won the award for Best Short Documentary. Festival distribution is handled by Square Eyes.
São Paolo Open Wound will celebrate its world premiere in Clermont Ferrrand and is a Dutch-Brazilian co-production directed by Brazilian director Elizabeth Rocha Salgado and produced by Jos de Putter for Deep Focus Productions. In a political moment when the president of Brazil encourages intolerance and the murder of dissident, black and indigenous bodies, underground artists from the Mamba Negra collective in São Paulo make of their art their resistance. A film that shows what is happening in the concrete cracks of a city that is undergoing uneven and inhuman gentrification.
Furthermore, two Dutch shorts are selected as part of the dance film retrospective programme Let’s Dance!: Daphne Lucker’s graduation short for the Netherlands Film Academy Sisters and short animation/ live action hybrid Golden Oldies* by Daan Velsink and Frame Order.
On the 31st of January, the 37th Short Film Market starts for professionals, taking place until February 4th. The market is a unique, privileged meeting space for representatives of all sectors of the short film world. See NL is present both online at Short Film Wire and on site at the market in booth no.6 together with a Dutch delegation with representatives of sales agent SND Films, festival distributor Kapitein Kort and animation film festival Kaboom.
