NFMLA Showcasing Dutch Filmmakers

An overview of all filmmakers included in the Dutch Focus at the NewFilmmakers Los Angeles Film Festival

NewFilmmakers Los Angeles (NFMLA) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continue their tradition of presenting Dutch shorts from upcoming filmmakers, with a virtual edition of the annual NFMLA Film Festival InFocus: Middle Eastern, Arab & Dutch Cinema Festival on December 11, co-hosted with presenting partners The Arab Film and Media Institute (AFMI) and Dutch Culture USA (Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in New York).

Why Didn't You Stay For Me by Milou Gevers

The weekend will showcase an international lineup of films by talented emerging filmmakers across three short film programmes. This event will include virtual screenings, filmmaker Q&A’s and industry panels. The weekend’s film programming begins on Saturday with InFocus: Dutch Cinema, a compelling and thoughtful collection of exciting work from up-and-coming Dutch short film directors curated in partnership with See NL.

This year’s selection dives deeply into themes of loss and resilience, and includes the US premiere of the latest work by NFMLA alum Thessa Meijer, Nervosa* (prod. Rinkel Film), whose last film was the Dutch submission to the 2020 Academy Awards, as well as the North American premiere of new work by 2006 Dutch Academy Award entry director Remco Polman; short animation Camouflage*, produced by Mooves in co-production with Lunanime.

Furthermore included in the prgram are Milou Gevers' 2021 Student Academy Award winning short documentary Why Didn't You Stay For Me, Marlon Brando* by Vincent Tilanus and Room for Film (a.o. Cannes Semaine de la Critique and TIFF), Mustachio by Iris Prize winner Victoria Warmerdam and produced by OAK Motion Pictures, A Holiday From Mourning* (prod. Studio Ruba) by Zara Dwinger, who was recently selected Talent en Route at the Holland Film Meeting and last but not least F*ck My Life (Prod. Millstreet Films) by first time film maker and actress Isis Cabolet.
