Dutch docs screening at Nyon Visions du Réel

Four Dutch productions and co-productions have been selected for Visions du Réel - International Film Festival Nyon, Switzerland. The 52nd edition takes place online 15–25 April 2021.

Feature documentary Sheltered,  directed by Saskia Gubbels, will screen in the Grand Angle section. The film is produced by DOXY and will have its international premiere at the festival. Sheltered was previously selected in competition at IDFA 2020. Saskia Gubbels directed award winning films such as Naomi’s Secret (2016, short doc) for which she received the Kids & Docs Special Jury Award at IDFA, 0,8 Amps of Happiness (2014, doc) and Through Ellen’s Ears ( 2011, short doc), among others. In Sheltered, behind the doors of a large animal shelter, you can find the tense relationship between humans and animals as well as a shared unconditional love.

Furthermore, two Dutch documentaries will celebrate their world premiere in the Burning Lights Competition: Looking for Horses, directed by Stefan Pavlović and WTC A Love Story by directors Lietje Bauwens (NL) & Wouter De Raeve (BE).

Looking for Horses is a first feature-length documentary directed by Stefan Pavlović. The film is an international co-production between artTrace (Netherlands), KAMEN artist residency (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Momento Films (France). Looking for Horses is a film about a friendship between the filmmaker and a fisherman. One lost his mother-tongue because of a stutter, the other lost his hearing during the Bosnian civil war. They look for ways to communicate, while the camera mediates their growing bond.

WTC A Love Story is a mid-length documentary produced by Video Power. Using film as an architectural tool, WTC A Love Story unravels power relations between various actors involved in the redevelopment of the neighbourhood around Brussels North Station. Whose stories enter the scene when the process of representation is accelerated?

Short film Scylos, directed and produced by Maaike Anne Stevens and co-produced by Peter Mann,
screens in Opening Scenes, a section dedicated to first short films and student films. Scylos is Stevens’ debut film and celebrates its world premiere at Visions du Réel. At the edge of the Moroccan Sahara a man contemplates his nomadic past and the turn his life has taken, whilst scientists in a German lab analyse deep-sea mud cores to unravel the Earth’s history.
