You’re in primary school, and your parent commits suicide. How are you supposed to move on?
Rebekka, Stef, Hessel and Annabel have one thing in common: they all lost their father to suicide. They are between 10 and 13 years old and don’t know each other. They don’t tend to talk about what happened to them. Other people find it uncomfortable, don’t know what to ask and are afraid to bring it up. The children have a conversation with director Milou whose mother also committed suicide 10 years ago. She is asking the questions no one dared to ask them before. Until this documentary, Milou has never met someone who also lost a parent to suicide. She often thought she was the only one - and so did these four children. The children all have their own challenges, but also have a lot in common with each other. The obstacles they face and need to overcome will be shown through an animated landscape, created with stop-motion animation. Each landscape symbolizes a new phase in the mourning process. The film tells a story about finding recognition and expressing yourself about what happened, even if it is seen as taboo. With this film the director wants to show that these children are not victims, but possess a tremendous resilience.
